The target groups and beneficiaries of VERD broadly fall into categories of vulnerable marginalized and underserved populations that include orphans and vulnerable children, the vulnerable women and widows, girls, youth, people with disabilities, the elderly, the minority groups and impoverished households among others
Although critically vulnerable marginalized and underserved populations in Uganda represent a large group of the vulnerable, most of them fall outside the main stream of the Uganda government programs and provision of basic social services. The response to their needs and fulfilment of their potential is very limited or absent.
In the targeted remote and hard to reach rural areas of Uganda, these beneficiaries are characterized by abject poverty, underdevelopment, inequality, abandonment, injustice, landlessness, food insecurity, hunger, affliction by gender based violence, human suffering, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, dependency, living in precarious situations and marginalization, being forgotten, isolated, threatened in impoverished families and critical vulnerability, lack of role models, dysfunctional home environment and economic and social deprivation.
